West Virginia continued its commitment to the tight end position by adding a verbal from a well-regarded juco prospect who could be able to help immediately in the upcoming season.
Gregory Genross, originally hailing from Kennedy High School in New York City by way of Dodge City (KS) Community College, announced his commitment to the Mountaineer program after a visit to the school this past weekend.
An NJCAA All-America selection at Dodge City, Genross (6-7, 230 lbs.) committed to Arkansas in the latter months of 2023, but began looking at other options as his December, 2023, graduation date neared.
Genross plays tight end with some wide receiver flair, exploding off the line of scrimmage and creating separation with an excellent release and a long stride. He catches the ball well, reaching with both hands in the same plane, and also displays the ability to high point the ball above defenders — something many collegiate pass catchers are still struggling to master.
Genross looks at ease lining up either in the slot, as a wing or as an in-line tight end, and shows good execution in his route running, making good cuts and not rounding off his breaks. As a blocker, he initiates contact with force, and can find targets when pulling inside to act as a lead blocker or on trap plays.
In two seasons at Dodge City, Genross had 26 catches for 265 yards and three scores in the Conqs’ versatile passing attack, which featured completions to 13 different receivers in 2023. He was also an all-conference selection this year as he helped Dodge City to an 8-3 record and its first-ever bowl win.
Genross had reported offers from Colorado, Houston, USF, Mississippi State, New Mexico State, South Alabama, Troy, Texas, State, Western Kentucky, Utah State and Marshall. He is ranked as the No. 1 juco tight end in the nation by multiple recruiting services, and as the No. 79 juco prospect overall by On3.com.
Prior to his two seasons at Dodge City, Genross was a football and basketball standout at Kennedy High School in the Bronx.
He will have two years of eligibility remaining at West Virginia.
