It’s been great to see in the news that our U.S. representatives have successfully supported Western Marylanders. Congressman Trone, our local representative, has had a special focus on understanding Garrett County and its needs — securing funding for the Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Company and the Oakland Community Center, and programs to combat opioid addiction and improve mental health. His staff are always ready to help individual constituents with all types of issues and have literally helped thousands of people, https://trone.house.gov/services/success-stories/.
And Senators Van Hollen and Cardin also have been our allies — obtaining almost $20 million in direct federal funding for existing local projects in Garrett, Allegany, Washington and Frederick counties. In Garrett County, this money will be used to purchase equipment to allow the county to perform public utility maintenance and repairs, install rural broadband, and respond to emergency situations more efficiently. It also will be used to repair and restore the oldest house in the county — the Drane House in Accident — for education and tourism.
At the federal level, since being elected in 2020, President Biden and his administration have secured investments in our infrastructure, our economy and our people increasing employment, locking in access to health care, and expanding opportunities for young people. For rural counties, the administration just announced almost $800 million in funding for projects that will specifically benefit us — providing reliable high-speed internet access, clean, safe water, and a range of support for rural families, agricultural producers and small businesses.
These are experienced leaders at the right time. With all the bad news we see in the world and all the challenges we face, these are positive things, and worth recognizing. I also think we should challenge Congress to build on it — to work together more and to pass bipartisan legislation, including the pending bills on national security and border security.
