West Virginia is putting in place a new rule that will make unemployed people demonstrate they are actively looking for jobs to get state benefits.
The law, starting on July 1, requires at least four job search activities per week for those getting unemployment benefits. It also sets benefit rates at $622 per week and permits part-time work while looking for full-time jobs.
The goal is to tackle concerns about the state’s unemployment trust fund, but it has sparked debate over its necessity. Critics argue that the law undermines the contributions of blue-collar workers, while supporters stress the need to ensure the fund's long-term stability.
The final version of the bill is a compromise between the House of Delegates and the Senate, as earlier proposals aimed to reduce benefit coverage and change the payment structure.
