We have long believed that the state Capitol in Charleston is a beautiful work of architecture, one befitting the important business that is conducted there for the people of West Virginia.
Legendary architect Cass Gilbert’s original plan included a mural display, according to Randall Reid-Smith, who is secretary of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History.
“There was actually no money at that time,” Reid-Smith said. “Of course, we had the Depression, and there was no extra money to do these things. There were 18 governors — 19 if you count Underwood twice — and we never got this done, and I really appreciate you doing this,” Reid-Smith told Gov. Jim Justice as the two announced plans to add the murals by November.
Reid-Smith said the murals will be allegorical, interpreting liberty, justice, commerce and education, as well as historical. The historical scenes will include Harpers Ferry in 1859, the Battle of Philippi, an arts celebration at Seneca Rocks and a historic compilation that is designed to represent the State Seal.
“Our state Capitol is already one of the most stunning in the nation, and the addition of these murals will only add to its beauty,” Justice said. “This is something that’s been talked about since the Capitol’s completion in 1932, and here we are nearly 100 years later, finally getting this project across the finish line. I cannot wait for these to be finished.”
We agree with the governor — we can’t wait to see the murals and the effect they have on making the Capitol even more majestic and inspiring.
Kudos to Justice, Reid-Smith and others in leadership for moving this project forward.
